Hi! I’m Phil – a 26-year-old recent graduate of the University of Queensland’s journalism program.

I decided on a career in journalism, after much soul-searching, because of a fundamental interest in the world we live and a deep conviction in the media’s role in society. There’s truly nothing I’d rather do than be a witness to history and tell the stories of those who are a part of it, big or small. I’m particularly interested in international and domestic politics, social justice, crime, the environment, religion, culture, music and technology. Being from the (relatively) small town of Gympie, I also highly regard local community news.

While I believe journalism is something that can only be learned with years of practice and I’m under no illusions about how competitive the current media environment is, my experiences thus far have hardened my resolve to build a career and make a valuable contribution. I’m the first to admit I’ve still got a lot to learn and I might not be completely polished, but I’m full of potential.

Over the past few years I’ve been honing my skills in broadcast, radio, print and digital journalism. These skills include: all aspects of photo, video and sound production; news and feature writing; pitching and sourcing stories; copy editing; research and investigation; media law, ethics and theory; and social media and interaction design.

I also got a taste of what it’s like to work in a newsroom having completed internship programs with ABC News Brisbane (TV, radio, digital) and The Brisbane Times (digital).

I’m self-sufficient, and able to produce my own material using a toolkit that currently consists of: a Canon 60D for video and photography; a Zoom H5 for audio purposes; a Surface Pro 3/Lumia 930 combination for all my mobile computing needs; and Adobe’s Creative Cloud Suite. In order to continue building my skills while looking for work, I’m currently laying down the groundwork for some stories that I hope to share here very soon!

In the meantime, have a look at what I’ve been up to for the past few years by selecting a category from the top menu. Feel free to send me an email, follow me on twitter or give me a call if you have a story idea, tip-off, or would like me to do some work for you!
